Team Educate are seeking an experienced Learning Support or Teaching Assistant to work on a 1-to-1 basis with pupils with Special Educational Needs (SEN) in our partner school in South Birmingham. 

The role will require training in Makaton or PECS as you will be supporting pupils in the classroom who are non-verbal.

The school are looking for an experienced Teaching Assistant or Special Needs Support Specialist to join their fantastic in-house support team. As part of the role, you will be working closely with pupils, primarily with a diagnosis of ASC, supporting them through individual mentoring, as well as assisting them in their lessons with classwork.

Experience with non-verbal communication and complex learning difficulties will be essential for this role. If you have taken on training in Makaton or PECS (The Picture Exchange Communication System) in working alongside children with moderate to severe learning difficulties, we’d love to hear more about your experience! Similarly, if you have experience in using Makaton within a school/learning-based role, you may be able to offer some excellent support for the schools’ most vulnerable pupils.

The ideal Makaton/PECS Classroom Assistant will need:

  • Experience of working in schools and supporting pupils with SEND and alongside various learning difficulties.
  • Teaching Assistant/classroom-based support experience.
  • Training in Makaton or PECS and experience supporting non-verbal communication.
  • A pro-active approach and the ability to find solutions when met with barriers in young people’s learning.
  • An understanding of strategies to support, engage and encourage young people in their learning.
